The game of blackjack is one which is adored greatly all around the world. Whether it is on an online casino, at home or in one of the famed casinos on the Las Vegas strip, blackjack is loved for its mix of simplicity, luck and skill.

For many, blackjack is a fantastic game to introduce players into the world of casino games. As the game can be played with only basic knowledge, with the more experienced players utilizing the advanced options, blackjack appeals to everyone and can provide a great way to learn about card games and casino etiquette.

The basic rules of blackjack are generally considered to be straightforward and can be split up into three individual steps.

1. Firstly, all players place a bet on the table and are dealt two cards for which the rest of the game is based on. As the aim of blackjack is to have a hand value of 21, or closest to, but not over, if the initial two cards are at a value that is felt sufficient enough to win, then the player can keep these two cards and state that no more cards are to be dealt to them.

2. If the player decides that the value of their hand is low enough to warrant the dealing of another card, then they can request this and the dealer will provide them with one extra card. Again, if the value of the hand is close enough to 21 that the player feels it is likely to win, they can ask for no more cards to be dealt to them.

3. The above point is repeated until up to a maximum of five extra cards have been dealt. However, should the value of the hand exceed 21 at anytime, then the player is considered to be bust and the game ends.

In essence, these are the three basic points of blackjack. It must be remembered that players are competing against the house and the house has to stick, meaning no further cards can be dealt to them, if their hand value reaches 17.

For more experienced players to the game, there are several options that can be put into practice at various points throughout the game.

Split. A popular option, if two cards of the same value are dealt to the player initially, they have the option to split their cards. This happens by the player placing another bet, equal to their first bet and having two hands to play with. Whilst this allows for twice the amount of winnings to be had, there is also the risk of twice as much money being lost.

Double Down. Once the player has received their first two cards, they have the option of placing the value of their first bet onto the table and taking an additional card, allowing for greater winnings should the overall hand value beat that of the dealers.

Insurance. The house can offer all players insurance if their up card is an ace, which is half the value of the players original bet and pays out at a rate of 2 to 1 should the dealers hand turns out to be blackjack.
